The Island of Malta in Renaissance Europe was the place that the Turks wanted above all. The knights of St.John had been a thorn in their side with the attacks the knights had made to Turk Shipping. A battle was always on the cards and in 1565 the Turk fleet arrived in Malta.
The "ifs" and "buts" do not make history but if the few thousand soldiers of Malta had not defended that small Island of Malta against overwhelming odds then Europe may not be the one we know today.Irregular miniatures

The Maltese corsairs had been given religous licence to chase and sink Turkish Shipping. These Corsairs were little more than pirates and the invasion of Malta may have been caused by these pirates from Malta
the knights as they against a contract signed and attacked the Venetians on Cyprus. The killing was terrible. The Venetian Doge held out to the end but seeing that all his horses had been killed for food and he had no powder left for his firearms he tried to organise a peace treaty with the Turks. They agreed but as always reneged on their agreement. Everyone was cut to pieces. The Venetian Doge was hung drawn and quartered and his skin was stuffed with straw to make an horrific effigy of him. The relief force from Messina had not arrived and with this went the hope of retaining Cyprus.
