LOOKING BACK . THE STARBUCKS EFFECT

Photos Jim Lyold

Once there were model toy soldier shops in London. I remember one in South Kensington near the station another near the Imperial war museum; there was Under Two flags, the one outside Harrow tube that did Jacklex then there was my favourite of all HINTON HUNT in Camden passsage. The guy who run it was the strangest but one of the most interesting blokes you could meet. It was a proper toy soldier shop in a street that was old world London. Becks was also here and had lots of Britainm's. Becks was a toy shop. That was the seventies and now we have passed into 2008 where everything in a road has become Banks, chain shops or estate agents. Once there were old caffs and tailors and of course toy soldier shops but now mere boredom.
At the top we have the old Hinton Hunt shop as it is now. When it was Hinton Hunt's it was a superb original Georgian frontage; see how they ruined it eh? On the left some GBE recastings; still avaible from the company.
