The regimental cap insignia of the famous infantry regiment, 71st New York Volunteer Infantry, Company “L”. The insignia is the pattern of 13 January 1897, a crossed rifle device for enlisted men struck of solid bronze, gilded, with regimental number/company letter hard-soldered to the device, having screw post fastener and thumb-nut for attachment to dress cap. In many cases, also attached to campaign hats although this placement not authorized though common. Company “L” commanded by Captain Elmore F. Austin. Company L lost 15 men during the Cuban Campaign, 11 dead, 4 wounded. It should be noted that this insignia and the regimental number, “71”, was not shared with any other regiment, national guard, militia, or regulars. Also, please note a photo of Company L taken in Florida before departing for Cuba. Photo includes all personnel, including those 15 men lost, as well as the company roster as it stood just a few weeks after the 1898 Cuban Campaign.
